Web Conferencing Calls Present a Big Way to Slash Fatty Business Overhead

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Crude oil costs are climbing and this causes business budgets are pressed short harder than even in the 1970s. With an economy sputters and credit stays hard to come by, prudent businesses know unnecessary expenses must reduced. Company directors everywhere must make some weighty priority judgments to lower costs. One of the easier way to reduce company expenditures is to make slashes in frivolous travel expenses, and the solution is Internet conference calls.

Internet conferencing allow anyone to communicate with coworkers virtually in a appointment in another city, in another time zone or most definitely in another continent. Typical Internet conferencing calls utilize state of the art streaming components. Since that they are streamed online, they merely utilize existing company resources. Only by going to the Internet, can a business person conduct a international conference from just about anywhere that has web access. Not only is it everywhere, it has huge potential to reduce big travel thousands.

Break throughs in telecommunications technology make Internet conferencing calls so easy for executives to give and receive briefings and proposals in real time. Web conference attendees can hear and see others as though they were really there, even if theyre really thousands of miles across the planet. The detail of the presentations audio and video should be crystal clear given the highest standards in streaming video.

Its hard to miss how most businesses would save money by switching to Internet conference calls rather than spending thousands flying out an employee on a costly trip. A business shouldnt waste money on transportation costs, hotels and meals. These savings matter over a year. Any trip not taken becomes increased flexibility for your business. Most everyone knows that many businesses are implementing web conferencing to reduce overhead on unnecessary company trips.

Searching for the number 1 location to go on holiday

Traveling is what people LOVE to do and dream about white beaches and blue sea and palm trees. But what is de number 1 location on the world where people want to travel to. That is of course the BIG question as we are with 6,215,000,000 (source 2002) people on the planet and everybody have their on ideal location to dream off. With so many DREAMS and some many opinions we need to ask us the important question IS THERE A PERFECT LOCATION or is it all a DREAM. As everybody knows nobody is perfect and DREAMS are all fiction or are sometimes DREAMS true. So the best way to find the perfect location to travel to we need to open our eyes and stop dreaming.

When everybody open their eyes and be realistic then maybe we will find the number 1 location to go on holiday. As there are so many locations on the world to travel to we need to narrow our search. As the world is divided in 5 continents we need to ask our self what part of the world the perfect location the travel to. And you can see again that is a question we cannot answer as there are 6,215,000,000 different answers. But we will not stop the journey to find our number 1 location as we need to make some decisions otherwise the perfect holiday will always be a DREAM.

We will find the way to our prefect holiday as people say for every problem is a solution.

Next time we will continue our to search for the number 1 location to go on holiday.

Royals Help Forgotten Island

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

For a Mediterranean island with good year round weather, a friendly local English speaking population and facilities to rival that of any of her competitors, Malta is a suprisingly often forgotten island for many people planning a holiday in the Mediterranean.

Malta missed some of her own government’s tourist targets in 2005, but a recent visit by Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh resulted in four days of positive media coverage in the island’s most important market – the United Kingdom – and also in over 50 other countries attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting, including Canada and Australia.

The Queen began her official visit to Malta before she opened the meeting, and was warmly greeted by friendly islanders.

Malta was governed by the British for a hundred and fifty years, and became independent in 1964. But the island has retained many British characteristics, including driving on the left, and British visitors account for nearly half of the island’s tourists.

The George Cross ranks with the Victoria Cross as Britain’s highest award for bravery – and Malta was awarded the Cross in 1942 by King George VI for the island’s resistance to German attempts to occupy the island, with Malta being under almost constant attack from June 1940.

As well as the challenge of drawing tourists away from other Mediterranean islands like Mallorca and Menorca, Malta has had to face the additional challenge of new holiday destinations in the former Eastern Bloc opening up, such as Bulgaria and Croatia, which tend to be cheaper.

Brighter Future

But where the Maltese tourist board has singularly failed to market the island’s appeal to the mass holiday market with any degree of success in recent years, the Queen’s visit has come at the right time for hotels and holiday companies hoping for a good 2006.

Tribune Properties, a British based company specialising in overseas properties including Malta comment:

‘Malta is not a high priority on the list of holiday destinations for many British people compared to the Spanish Costas, Canary and Balearic Islands. The visit of the Queen showed Malta in a very positive light, and hopefully the island’s tourist officials will be able to capitalise on the trip and increase hotel and holiday bookings in the months ahead. Given Malta’s past record of promotion though if 2006 sees an increase in visitors it will be despite of the official promotions, and not because of it.’.

More good news for the Malta holiday industry came in October with the announcement that low cost airlines had been been given the right to fly to the island.

‘This will help both the hotel and property industries in Malta’ add Tribune. ‘With the cost of getting to the island coming down, Malta should see her share of the short stay European holiday market increase substantially, increasing employment locally and benefitting the economy overall’.

The Exotic Country of Ecuador

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Ecuador has 270,000 km2 (around 99,000 square miles). This country has the biggest bio-diversity per area in the world.

In a study by Conservation International, Ecuador ranked among the 17 Mega Diverse countries, alongside the United States, China, Australia, Brazil and Mexico. With 9.2 species per km2, it occupies the first place in the world with regards to species per area.

The richness of this country lies in its DIVERSITY, both natural and cultural. Ecuador has 4 diverse and unique regions:

The Amazon Rain Forest
The Coast
The Highland Andes
and The Galapagos Archipelago

These four regions are subdivided into 22 provinces. Besides its exuberant bio-diversity, Ecuador is home to an impressive variety of ethnic groups, including some communities who still preserve their non-western or pre-Columbian values and practice cultural manifestations from ancient times.

LOCATION.- Ecuador is one of the smallest countries in America. It lies on both the northern and southern Hemispheres and is divided by the “Equator”, which gave Ecuador its name in the 19th Century. Ecuador borders are: Colombia (North), Peru (South and East), and the Pacific Ocean (West).

POPULATION.- Approximately 13 million people.

LANGUAGE.- Spanish. It’s worth mentioning that in Ecuador most of the indigenous population speaks Quichua. There are around 3 million Indians in this country.

In many schools English is taught as the second language. There are 18 different languages among Ecuadorian communities.

RELIGION.- 95% are Catholics.

CURRENCY.- US Dollar. The government has produced a series of local coins of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 cents and 1 dollar coin, that have the same value as the American coins (which are also accepted).

Banks open from 8h30 to 17h00 and on Saturdays only half day. Money exchange offered every day in main hotels and in Amazonas street in Quito.

GOVERNMENT.- Democratic. Current President is Lucio Gutierrez.

ECUADOR CLIMATE.- Ecuador is located in the Tropical Zone. The climate throughout the country ranges from tropical equatorial rain in the Amazon to perpetual snow on the top of the mountains.

Cities in the highlands have temperatures that vary from 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, while coastal cities’ temperatures vary from 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day.

The weather in the jungle is constant: rainy, humid and warm, however, temperature drops a bit during the months of June to November.

The Galapagos Islands are always sunny and warm, however, temperature drops a bit during the months of June to November.

WHAT TO WEAR: In the city of Quito and the highlands wear spring attire during most of the months except “occasionally” in March, April, May where temperature drops a little especially at nights. Bring warmer clothing like those you would wear during the fall. A raincoat or jacket would be useful at night since it gets pretty chilly.

Guayaquil.- and other coastal cities, wear summer clothing all year round. During the rainy months, December to May, the weather is still very warm. During the months of June to November the weather is cloudy and a bit colder. Bring along a light jacket.

Galapagos.- Wear comfortable walking shoes and casual clothing. Shorts, T-shirts and summer clothing will be just fine. Don’t forget a hat, a camera, sun block, and a bathing suit. During the months of June to November the weather is cloudy and a bit colder.

Amazon Rainforest.- Wear clothing adequate for a rain. If you can get yourself a raincoat (poncho), take it with you, as well as several sets of light pants and long sleeve shirts. Shorts are less useful because of the insects and abundant vegetation that you will walk through on you excursions.

A hat, rubber boots and insect repellents are also a must. If you plan to take pictures, you will need high-speed film.

AIRPORT TAX.- There is a $25 tax fee for anyone leaving the country from Quito or Guayaquil.

TOURIST VISA.- Visitors can stay up to 90 days without a tourist visa.

TAXI RATES.- Approximately $3 to $4 dollars per ride from the airport to the city. These rates vary among the main cities.

TRANSPORTATION.- Main cities (Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca) have local airports serviced by the local airlines Tame, Aerogal and Icaro, besides international airlines.

The airports in Quito and Guayaquil are the only ones handling international flights. Both cities have grown to surround their airports, which have renewed modern terminals.

The government is building new airports in these cities that will be bigger and will have all the necessary modern facilities and technologies.

Bus lines offer Land transportation where you can just jump on the next bus leaving to your destination. Each city has its own terminal, with frequent departure to each one of the different provinces of our country.

OCEAN TRANSPORTATION: Ecuador’s main port, Guayaquil, handles most of the countries imports and exports. Esmeraldas is the port for Ecuador’s petroleum exports. Other ports of commercial and tourist interest are Manta and Puerto Bolivar.

There are a number of companies that offer cruises to the Galapagos Islands in special ships for this purpose, such as Santa Cruz http://www.galapagos-islands-tourguide.com/travel-to-galapagos-islands.html and Isabela II deluxe ship http://www.galapagos-islands-tourguide.com/cruise-galapagos-islands.html

Passengers may fly to the Archipelago from Quito or Guayaquil.

AWARD TO ECUADOR’S NATURE TOURISM.- This is an update information, where the Spanish magazine “Viajes y Turismo” awarded Ecuador for the “best offer of nature tourism, in a ceremony that took place at Aranda de Duro, approximately 150 km from Madrid.

Enjoy Ecuador’s dense tropical Amazon Rainforest, snow dusted Andes volcanoes, its beautiful beaches along the Pacific Coast of South America and of course the magic of the Galapagos Islands.

Ecuador is many worlds united by history, geography, and astonishing variety.

Listen to the call of the Cuckoo, now almost extinct in Ireland or pick some rare wildflowers. Try your hand at fishing-the area boasts numerous species including Cod, Pollack, Tope, Mackerel, Gurnard, Conger Eel, Wrasse and Ling. Sample some of the areas fine locally produced cuisine or join the locals for a few pints of Guinness.

In the evening return home to sit at a blazing turf fire, relax with family and friends playing cards or board games as there are no phones or televisions in the cottages. Take life at a slower pace and re-invigorate your mind and body. Listen to the soothing sound of the Ocean as it crashes over the rocks less than 100 meters from where you sit.

Build an Ecommerce Web Site

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

With the billions of sales posted by e-commerce Websites every year, it’s no wonder that many entrepreneurs are putting their money into building, improving, and maintaining e-commerce Websites. The profitability of a Web venture is obvious, but one contention remains – is there a best way to build an e-commerce Website?

E-commerce site owners who understand basic html and have background in Web development tend to build their Websites by themselves, but experts question whether this is optimum. Creating an e-commerce Website from scratch takes a long time – time which, according to some studies, is better used managing and implementing reforms to advance the business.

Why does it take so long? Remember that e-commerce Websites are generally more complex than a regular site, primarily because of the additional functionality and security features it requires. One such added functionality is a “shopping cart,” which is the lifeblood of e-commerce transactions. The shopping cart keeps tabs on the products a buyer picks out from your inventory (with descriptions, images and prices, among others). It quickly calculates taxes, shipping charges and total payables in one click. After a buyer “checks out,” the shopping cart manages the payment transaction by “coordinating” with a clearing house using an encrypted connection. Finally, it sends confirmation messages (usually through e-mail) to your buyers, and records the sale to your dispatch department.

With such complexities, it is obvious why some e-commerce entrepreneurs (even those with backgrounds in programming) choose to outsource Web development. If your business can afford to spend money on Internet commerce, then you should consider hiring Web development companies, even small ones – they usually work as a team, so you can be assured of timely delivery and after-sales support.

If you want lower costs, though, then it might be best to hire a freelance Web professional, who can usually do the job for a smaller price. Be sure to check his experience and background, though, because not all ‘cheap’ services are quality services. You need to spend a lot of time explaining the details of your project to your Web developer. It is best to prepare a comprehensive outline of how you want your site to work, perhaps give sample sites that you would like to imitate, and set clear project timeframes to minimize misunderstandings and delays.

Database Driven Web Site – Do You Need It?

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Many of site owners still don’t realize all advantages of database driven web sites and don’t use all abilities they give. So when do you need a database driven web site and how it will make your web-life better?

What is a database driven web site?

Database driven web site is one that uses database for collecting and storing information. What information it can be? Various. Email addresses, contact info, clients list, products list, listings of real estate property, trade offers, images, and links, etc.

How does it work?

For example, you have a static HTML web site for your business with posted information about the company, products or services, clients, and there is contact form. If you have strong HTML skills you update your site without problems each time you need it. Otherwise you hire a webmaster or use maintenance services of a web design company. You write info in text document, send it to your webmaster, he manually inserts it to the site. You store your products, clients, and contacts info in Word or Excel files. Probably you store emails that you receive from contact form in Word or Excel files.

Is it handful and easy? Is there an alternative?

In the database driven web site all information is stored in table format of databases on the server, script generates pages that are showed on the site as usual HTML ones. Usually database driven web sites have admin panel with user-friendly interface where you can manage the site content, i.e. add, edit, or delete info by yourself, create new pages or delete old ones. You can update your site easily each time you need it.

Requests sent form contact form can be saved in database for further use, you can edit them, group, and sort.

You can create pictures gallery on your site and update it easily.

You can have news box at your site and update it easily each time you need it.
.

Is it expensive?

No, if you order the site from a web design/development company that has good experience in database driven web sites design that means elaborated and tested development process, time and cost saving methods which give high-quality work within short timeline and at affordable price. Ask your web design company do
they make database driven web sites, if yes, look at the examples of such previous works, ask references of the customers – are they satisfied with their web sites? – and if the price is acceptable move forward to your new web site. Or search for another web development company using the same criteria for choice.

What else you should know?

Probably, you will need to change hosting plan or even hosting provider to host your new database driven web site.

Usually there are such requirements for hosing:

  • Must support PHP/MySQL or ASP/MSSQL
  • At least 75-100 Mb of disk space
  • Must have Database Client
  • Must have Mail server

Can You Update Your Own Web Pages?

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

When your website is finished, can you change information on the pages yourself, or do you need to pay someone to do that? You need to think about this before the website is started.

(A) You can edit the HTML files:

A web designer can build a website which is easy to maintain from the beginning by using a system like active server pages (ASP) or PHP.

In ASP and PHP, if the header, style sheets, navigation bars, and footer for all pages are in separate files, then each page contains only that page’s information plus links to the header etc.

Each page is then easy to edit without fear of changing the style, or accidentally messing with the header. Changes can be made to e.g. the phone number once in the header instead of on all pages separately.

Such pages can also contain code that displays other information like dates, so that your News page heading can always show the current month and year even if you haven’t had time to update it for six weeks.

If you are the owner of the website, you will have FTP (File Transfer Protocol) access to your website. There are many shareware FTP programs you can use: WS_FTP, CuteFTP, etc. to copy the web pages from the server to your hard disk.

When you do this, note the folder on the server that the files are in, so that when you copy them back, they end up in the right place. The main folder for your website may be called something like public_html or www, while the file you want to edit may be in a sub-folder of that.

You can edit many things on your web pages without knowing any HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). Just use a plain text editor like Notepad, and don’t touch the HTML codes. These are inside angle brackets (less than and greater than signs).

If you would like to start using HTML codes for paragraphs and line breaks, bold and italic, bullets or numbered lists, then look first at the coding used by your web designer. Visit www.w3.org, or get a book on HTML.

You can find shareware and low cost HTML editors on the web. These will put the HTML codes into the web page for you. Or, you could buy a high-end web design program like Dreamweaver.

When you finish and save your changes, open the file on your hard disk with a browser. In an HTML editor there will be a function key for this. If you are using Notepad then go to your browser, File: Open: Browse: to open the file. Or use My Computer to find the file you have just edited and click on it. If the web page gets its style from another file, then the appearance may be rough but you can at least check that the words are what you intended.

Then upload the file to the correct folder on your website and check it again.

Do small changes at a time and don’t close your editor until the web page looks just right, just in case you need to Un-Do some changes.

(B) Content Management Systems (CMS):

CMS is usually purchased by medium sized organizations. (Small businesses use (A) above, or (D) below, and large organizations use their own IT Department.)

There are various levels of CMS used for editing web pages on-line without downloading and uploading the HTML files, and without needing to see any HTML codes. These come at various costs.

With all CMS systems, you can type into an on-line screen or you can copy from a plain text file and paste into the CMS screen. With some, you can copy from a word document and past into a CMS program that can clean off the unwanted Word processor formatting codes.

(C) Database systems

Websites that run from databases come with administration screens to edit the contents of the database. These may be for product catalogues, ecommerce, news pages and notices.

These administration screens put the information in the right places on the right web pages, in pre-set styles.

CMS formatting can be also added to database systems, so that you can enter paragraph breaks etc.

(D) Pay a web designer for updates:

Most web designers charge so little for updating a web page that they have designed, especially if they use ASP or PHP, that possibly you don’t need any of the above options. However, if you ask them to update a web page that someone else has designed, it may cost more.

Conclusion:

It’s best to decide which method of updating your website will suit you before you get your website designed. Whatever you decide, for you website to stay competitive it needs to look up to date.

Excellent Snow All over the French Alps

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

We have had just about two metres snow during the last seven days. The snowfall was so heavy that chairlifts have been closed, the railroad train has been finishing at Chamonix train station and not going to Les Grands Montets and delays with Geneva transfers. Several roads were shut and weather warnings released.

Compare this to two seasons ago, with the unbelievably hot February conditions, rocks showing on pistes, and reports that global warming could mean the end of snowboarding in the European Alps. Highlighting this the OECDs study from 2006 warned that global warming would make skiing holidays far too pricey for the majority of snowboarders, with one 3rd of resorts going bust and the receding of glaciers. Glaciologists assert that it is virtually impossible to ascribe these annual deviations in the weather patterns to the off shoots of climate change.

So we might have the deepest downturn in almost 25 yrs, and the Pound Sterling has headed to more lows compared to the euro, however the snow is exceptional, and the recent reservations highlight that people are enthusiastic to take of advantage of the fantastic skiing conditions. This winter is certainly the finest in seven winter seasons, and lots of skiers are saying it is the nicest skiing conditions in ten years.

All the same remember that this amount of snow means large risks of avalanche.
