Easy DIY: How to Replace a Power Cord
Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010One of the simpler tasks to perform around the home, the only thing you’ll need when changing a power cord will be a set of pliers a screwdriver and possibly a utility knife. Always remember, that while simple you are still dealing with a potentially dangerous situation, if you’re not sure, contact a professional!
Replacing the cord on most appliances is a simple task, with the power cords easily accessible. Bigger appliances like cheap tumble dryers or washing machines may require you to remove a panel. In such cases, replacing the power cord is still a relatively simple task as most appliance manufacturers will offer a replacement moulded plug, which should always be used over a third party replacement or raw cord option. The manufacturer replacement will also come with the correct gauge wire, which will avoid hunting round in the manual for the correct gauge or your appliance frying.
Some appliances, like laundry machines, may require a plate to be removed that covers the connection within the unit. When performing these changes use caution! Replacing the wrong wire in the wrong place could end in disaster. Make a diagram or take a photograph before starting. Once you have done this, remove the cord and make the new cord connection. Make sure to feed the new cord through the cover plate before making the connections.
