How Is the Christian Assembly on a Mission?
Monday, October 5th, 2009Sent church is definitely a trendy title that is all over the place these days. the idea that we are obligated to label churches, missional, has forever been odd to me. come on, shouldnt all places of worship be missional in their very nature? it should be expected from a church, at its very core, shoot to engage their culture and city with the good news as a missionary would in a foreign country? Isnt what the places of worship is challenged to do in the sending out by Jesus in Matthew 28:19? Our own city deserves this kind of church. Churches in Austin is slowly transitioning to what our Creator instructed in Scripture.
The Son of God gives the challenge in Acts 1:8 saying, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8 explains this idea as, right before Jesus Christ goes up to Heaven, He commissions the disciples on a story that would start right in their own community. He begins with their local place of Jerusalem, and then broadens the call to the far parts of the world.
As disciples of Jesus, we are not called to social clubs, but to be missional people who are aggressively going out and going to areas right where they are with the gospel. We have noticed this throughout history: God motivated Abraham on a mission to leave his place of origin and his people and go to the land that God would show him (Gen. 12:1), God moved Moses on a journey to restore an enslaved people and lead them to relationship with God (Exodus 3:8-10), God sends Jesus on a mission to creation to restore all things to Himself through the crucifixion (Colossians 1:20). And now God is sending us on a exploration to engage neighborhoods, cities, people groups, and even nations with the gospel(Matt. 28:19 Mark 6:7 Luke 10:1 John 20:21 Acts 1:8). If we dont respond to this motivation and continue to see the places of worship like a closed off country club ” encouraging that people fix their performance, pay their fees, and visit to our building God will continue His journey without us.
